Wednesday – What is the link between Sexuality and Spirituality with Deb Hirsch.

Deb Hirsch is a speaker, church leader and writer who has led churches in both Australia and Los Angeles. She is one of the founders of Forge Mission Training Network and is a member of the Forge America national team. She also serves as a board member for Missio Alliance and was part of the leadership team of Christian Associates, a church planting movement in Europe, North & South America. She is the co-author (with Alan Hirsch) of Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship, and her new book Redeeming Sex reflects her own journey and attempts to bring new conversations about sexuality into the context of the church.

Deb and I worked on some material several years ago for a service that I produced at CityLife Church Knox in Melbourne.  We wanted people to understand that there is a link between Sexuality and Spirituality.

This understanding shifts the way you think about sexuality.

  • Spirituality is our deep longing and desire to know and be known by the other – out there. We wonder what are we doing here?  Are are not alone in the universe – spiritually.
  • Sexuality is our longing our passion, our pain.  It pushes us out of isolation and into relationship.   It is the desire to know and be known by the other – humanity.
  • Spirituality is a vertical longing between us and God, sexuality is an horizontal longing between us and others. They are  two sides of the same coin and its vital that we understand the connection.

Scott McKnight in his book “The Jesus Creed” says it like this:

“When an expert in the law asked Jesus for the greatest commandment, Jesus responded with the Shema, the ancient Jewish creed that commands Israel to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. But the next part of Jesus’ answer would change the course of history.   Jesus amended the Shema, giving his followers a new creed for life: to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, but also to love others as themselves”.

This is the way we should live our lives.  Knowing God and loving God and knowing others and loving others.

This video Sexuality and Spirituality with Deb Hirsch is part one of two videos on Sexuality and Spirituality.

REDEEMING SEX: Naked Conversations About Sexuality and Spirituality by Debra Hirsch (Author), Gabe Lyons (Foreword)  available for pre order.  Release on the 15th May

Nothing has exposed the gap between the church and the broader society quite like the cultural argument over sexuality. Relationships, identities, orientations and even seemingly straightforward concepts such as gender have cut battle lines between the church and the world. In the fog of war and the cloud of conflict, it’s increasingly hard to see our way clearly. There is hope, however. Debra Hirsch has seen it firsthand—in meaningful lifelong relationships with LGBT friends and neighbors, in Christian fellowships and in movements that have held a concern for people created in God’s image and a high view of the Bible’s teaching on sexuality in constructive tension.

I am a team member for an upcoming pastors’ conference, ReEquip’15. The Hirschs will both be sharing at our event. I want to help promote the two of them in the best way possible, especially through social media outlets. I’m thrilled I found your website.
